About Stephen Lord

Born in Rossendale, Lord's natural artistic ability was first noticed at senior school. When viewing his work one is not surprised to learn that throughout his life he has been forced to balance his desire to paint with his work-disciplined environment.

He began his professional career as an artist whilst living in Portugal in the late 1990s and has sucessfully exhibited his work both in Portugal and the UK. Many of his pieces are housed in private collections in Lancashire, North and West Yorkshire, Cumbria and Cheshire, as well as various parts of Portugal.

Whether he is portraying the extremes arising from the force of the four elements of earth, water, wind and fire he draws you into a world depicting either the power yet beauty of destruction, or the latent, mystical, peacefulness of nature. Whether it be trees dancing above flames, stars born of spewing gas, drowned memories of the deep, sunsets or seascapes, the energy explodes before your eyes with a passionate, vibrant force.

His paintings, which have at times be likened to those of Turner, at first surprise, then excite the viewer. One cannot just walk by, they command you to stay and look deeper.

Of his work Lord says his main objectives are, when painting, to bring feeling and colour to the piece. It must become 'Alive' as he initially envisioned it before he is satisfied.

When he was diagnosed with cancer in 2011 he was unable to paint for some time needing all his energy to fight the disease but since coming back from the brink his paintings have developed a more spiritual side to them whilst still encompassing all the original passion and energy.
